Told from the perspective of an industry insider and donor father, The Dark Side of Tissue Donation provides a unique, emotional, and disturbing perspective on tissue donation. Chris shares what the tissue banks don't want you know; information that has for too long been too taboo to speak of, but information that every donor family must know before the choice to donate is made. You'll learn what it's like to be a donor father procuring tissues from other donors. You'll find out what it takes to make it through a day in the life of a procurement technician. You'll also be exposed to information that only those within the industry have been allowed to know; what really goes on behind the closed doors of operating rooms and corporate board rooms. Profiteering, a body's worth, industry abuses, informed consent, organs and tissues for illegal immigrants, minorities and donation - nothing is too controversial and Chris covers it all. Get ready to find out what really happens in The Dark Side of Tissue Donation.

It's an honor to be the first to review this book. Like the author once did, I currently work for a tissue bank. I believe strongly that what I do is important but I have major moral dilemma with how the tissue banking industry operates. The workplace is not a conducive environment to share my misgivings about the industry that employs me, so I picked up this book to see what a fellow colleague brave enough to voice his opinion has to say. What I found was remarkable. The way Mr. Truitt describes the inner workings of tissue donation process is 100% congruent with my personal experience as an insider. He speaks with absolute authority because of his experience as both a donor father and tissue bank employee. Having been on both sides of the fence, he shares an amazing perspective from a place very near and dear to his heart. Through this short but eloquently written piece, I was able to explore and even clarify some of my own conflicted feelings about the ethics of my profession.
I'll wrap up by saying this book is not a piece of sensationalist journalism written with the sole purpose of bashing the tissue banking industry. It is the voice of someone who believes strongly in the value of donating but is dismayed at how the organizations involved in this important work have come to operate under applicable laws. Mr Truitt tells a very frank and compelling story with the altruistic and constructive intention of raising awareness so the tissue donation process can be reformed for the better.

The Dark Side of Tissue Donation Christopher Truitt 9780557048403 Books Reviews
I work for an OPO, and I agree with everything the author of this books says. I agree that tissue for profit and informed consent needs to be more detailed. And that consent for organ donation on there drivers license also includes tissue and eye. A lot of people are not aware of that. They think they will only take there organs.
I didn't particularly enjoy this book; the only thing I found beneficial was that it was a quick read.
I too come from an extensive surgical background assisting in the implantation of over 1000 allografts. I then transitioned into a tissue banking role and received my CTBS certification from the AATB.
I found that this book really didn't contain any sourced material validating its claims or statements. The point of view of the author spoke in very generalized statements and vague references to SEC data. This was less of a research focused document and more in the realm of opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions, I just wish that I didn't spend $10 to read the author's resentful opinion of an industry where everyone doesn't work for free.
